How can we find peace and belonging when the world feels overwhelming? Is it possible to use technology to surround someone with comfort when physical distance prevents an actual hug? I tackle these ideas in my Augmented Reality project, Pocket Comfort, which explores creating a completely portable sphere of comfort visible only to the user, perfect for those who cannot easily carry around a physical comfort object with them. In surrounding the user with gentle digital content that appears to live within the real world through AR, I invite users to look for the beauty in their surroundings and to remind themselves that they are capable and appreciated. Soft music, hand-drawn assets, pastel colours and so on aim to create a sense of gentleness evocative of the hugs I wish to give my loved ones who live across the country.

Here's how to experience it:

1️⃣ - Download the FREE Hoverlay app on your phone or tablet.

2️⃣ - Grab some headphones or turn your device's volume up so you can enjoy the beautiful music and gentle narration 🎵💕

3️⃣ - Scan the QR code found in the attached images, or visit https://hoverlay.io/space/13506 to open the experience! (You can also find this link in the bio of Pocket Comfort's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/pocket_comfort/ .)

4️⃣ - Face an open space! You'll want roughly 2 metres of clear floor all around you for the best experience. If you're short on space, we recommend holding your phone as close to your face as possible!

5️⃣ - Press "Start" when you're ready, and enjoy! 💖

You'll get to see beautifully soft digital elements placed all around you, as though living in your real environment, and you'll receive reminders that you're capable and appreciated no matter what.
